BattleCom is a must for anyone playing team or cooperative games. It is a voice-communication software package that runs in the background during a gaming session. For the true champion of teamwork, this is the tool for you.

There are two ways to run BattleCom, peer-to-peer and client-server. The most common application is the peer-to-peer. This is when one player sets their computer up as a host and then one or more friends connect to that player. A client-server requires a dedicated (non-playing/speaking computer) to act as the host/server and then all players connect to the one computer. Each has their advantages and disadvantages, but both are very easy to set up and use.

The voice quality is unparalleled. Even on the lower settings, the quality is outstanding. The moderate setting (Echo), which is a nice balance between bandwidth and computer usage, sounds like a typical cellular phone. Everyone has a distinct voice, which is a necessity in combats when someone cries out for assistance.

On a decent PII computer, there is no noticeable slowdown of games, although when some scenes or maps are loading there is an occasional, momentary loss of connection with other players. This does not cause the game to lock-up or freeze, but you do loose communication with your partners for a second or two.

Another drawback is the time delay. It takes from 1 to 3 seconds for the message to be relayed to all of the connected computers. It takes a bit of getting used to, and people will often accidentally talk over each other when first using the software, but the problem is not insurmountable. Users just need to compensate for the delay in the speaking and realize that they hear the warnings or requests for help a few seconds after they are made.

All in all, it is solid software that works well in many different gaming environments. The audio quality is the best we have come across. At CheatSearch.com, before we load our favorite multiplayer games we connect to our dedicated BattleCom server and discuss tactics for the evening.

Side Note: Microsoft recently acquired ShadowFactor Software. Rumor has it that the BattleCom technology is going to be incorporated into DirectX 8.
