It's you against sinister alien invaders in an all out campaign for world
control, now out for your PS-X.
This game is a port from a PC game, but has several PSX touches to it.
Please put all X-COM messages/strategy/tips in this folder.

So, how far has everyone gotten? I just ended my old game and started a new
one 'cuz I figured out a few things along the way. Yeah, some of these
points are in the manual, but here they are anyway:
1) Don't put a base close to the water--at least not in the beginning of the
game (perhaps later in the game it can be of use). For instance, I put a
base on Japan (largely because of how well they were funding me) and
installed a long range radar system. Problem is, I didn't have any hangars,
so I couldn't go after any UFOs! And even if I did, most of them were flying
over the water. (Just TRY to get a UFO to crash on Japan!) This leads me
to...
2) When you're making a base, build as many other buildings as you'll need,
e.g., if you need a hangar, keep in mind that it takes 25 days for it to be
finished. Don't wait until you have a stash of money in your pocket.
3) I suggest you build TWO bases at the beginning. The first one comes well
equipped (three hangars, planes, crew, etc.) and it won't be too long before
you'll wish you had another base. So get cracking! I went with my two
largest financers (the US and France), so I've got a base smack-dab in the
middle of each of those countries.
4) If you have a second base without a Skyranger, at least keep an
Interceptor there. The Interceptor has a very limited range in comparison to
the Skyranger, so plan to take out the UFOs in other countries and send in
the Skyranger (assuming you have only one at this point). The Skyranger can
easily make a long trip from the US to Asia--an Interceptor can't.
X-COM is a long, strategic game.. and I got my feet wet by learning how to
play, quitting that first 'practice' game, and starting a new one with
tactics I learned. (I admit it's tough to quit that first game, but once you
won't have regrets when you plunge into a new one.)
There probably are cheats out there, but I think you'll actually cheat
yourself of the game's challenging appeal if you use them. This game is
specifically one of long range planning. If you're not interested in that,
you'll want the cheat--and miss the game in the process.

I couldn't agree more. As far as strategy games go, this has got to be the
toughest I've ever played. I'm sure that maybe a money cheat would help a
bit, but other than that, I don't think I'd want to go and give my operatives
every alien weapon all at once or anything.
I'm curious, Ecowden, about what difficulty setting you're playing on? I'm
doing beginner right now and I can't imagine it getting much harder. I
assume with higher difficulty settings, there are more UFOs to chase down and
probably more aliens per encounter. I dunno - I think it'll be a while
before I go trying the Superhuman mode.Subj: Re:A few tips for early on...

Actually, PStation, I'm at beginner level too and it's TOUGH! I'll try a
few days on the tough setting though, just to see what's in store for the
future.
Here's a RESEARCH tip: when you get a chance, study ALIEN ALLOYS. This will
enable you to research and eventually produce some protective gear for your
troops. This will make it difficult for aliens to kill your favorite
players.
BTW, aliens can actually kill eachother. I was fighting in one two-hour
battle last night in which a mini-flying saucer shot another one down (a bad
shot, I'd say). Thankfully, the enemy is not infallible.

I think your base strategy is good. You need to have two at the beginning.
Your origional base that is well equipt, and a listening post. Maybe after a
month or two you can upgrade the listening post to have a hanger or two. Then
you make a 3rd base, that is another listening post. You just keep doing that
until you have reached the maximum number of bases.
Another good strategy is to scrap the pistols you get in the game. Then buy a
few rifles, but buy a lot of scientists. After your first mission you study
the alien technology, then you scrap the rifles, and you have good weaponry.
Thats what I did, in the PC version. Subj: Is it out?

I can't seem to figure out exactly why the manual has so little game info in
it. With the exception of the walkthrough, there's very little info about
the control of many of the options in the game. Sure, it adds to the
challenge by making you figure them out yourself, but a summary of the
weapons or something along those lines would have been nice. Makes me
curious as to how in depth the PC version manual was.Subj: x-com is better

Are there any particular options you're having trouble with? I've fooled
around with the controls quite a bit and have discovered information not
contained in the manual.
For instance, in the combat mode: those four icons in the bottom left corner
of the selection area. One is a ---->, which allows you to use all your Time
Units. The icon just below it stands for "Aimed Shot". When selected,
you're limited in your movement range in the following manner:
Aimed Shot = 43 Time Points. You have 64 Time Points. Thus, available
Time Points (64) - Time Points needed for an Aimed Shot (43) = 21 available
Time Points.
The same type of formula goes for the other icons: one stands for the "Snap
Shot" and the last one for "Auto Fire". I suggest using this option just
before you allow the aliens to take a turn, as you might not want to limit
the movement of all your players.
It's use? You can set up a defense with this command. For example, if
you're entering an area where you know hostiles are, you can kneel just
outside it and give your soldiers the auto-fire command. When an alien comes
into range, your soldiers will shoot. *Make sure your soldier is facing in
the direction you want him to fire.*
Hope that helps some. I was sort of peeved when I found the manual to be
lacking in many respects and I downloaded the IBM demo to access that manual,
but no luck. If you come up with anything on your own, please let me know.

I just traded in my Power Serve 3-D Tennis for X-COM. X-COM is definitely the
better game. The wonderful music really sets the atmosphere for this
scenario. The battlezone part of the game reminds me of Maxis' wonderful
game: Robosport!
My question: Is there any goal that I'm supposed to be pressing toward? It
seems that the whole point of the game is to wait for a UFO to come near my
base, intercept it, investigate its crash site, return to base, upgrade
bases, start the cycle over again. What is the point? Do I ever get to mount
assaults against cities that the aliens took over? Do I get to mount assaults
against alien mother ships?
ChrisSubj: Re:Sparse Manual

Thankfully, XCOM is more indepth than that. The further you get into the
game, the more you'll see. For instance:
When aliens create bases, you can attack them with a ground force.
"Motherships" begin making their way to the planet--we're talking multilevel
UFOs, here (and all that implies).
I'm sure there's more to this game. It couldn't have made "Best Strategy
Game of the Year" last year if it were just "attack UFO, gather items at the
crash site, research them, attack UFO, etc.".
Keep a watchful eye--and don't always be so quick shooting those small UFOs
down: they may be scouts for larger things to come.

X-COM2 kinda bites, but atleast it is a new challenge. Emphasis on challenge,
land terror missions are easy. But when a cargo or cruise ship gets attacked,
you had better be prepared for the long haul. There are like 3 levels to a
boat terror mission.
When you attack a colony, you have to battle through two levels. The outside,
then the inside. It is so annoying. THe rest of the game is about the same.

I've only played the PSX version--but if you still have your PC, X-COM is
likely faster on the PC than the PSX. (The PSX version suffers from ~40
second loads between stages.)
But since you've played XCOM2 already, you might want to just rent XCOM on
the PSX and see for yourself--and if you like XCOM, buy it for your PC.

Posted on: America Online
Here's a tip if you're having trouble rearming your Interceptor:
If you have Avalanche missles in storage (or stingers or cannons, etc.) but
can't seem to get them armed onto your plane, 'reset' the Hangar status by
sending your plane out to a "Waypoint" close to the base. Once departed,
return the plane back to the hangar and your plane will be rearmed.
This problem pops up when your plane doesn't have enough weapons to re-equip
it and you purchase/transfer weapons to the base. It's annoying that the
game doesn't recognize you've received the weapon supplies, but this is a way
to get around it.Subj: Research

I think the reasearch is one of the more exciting aspects of this game, as
it's pretty cool to get ahold of the aliens' weapons, study them, and build
new ones for X-Com.

simply makes me want to pick up my PSX and throw it against a wall. Yes I
am good at games, but this game is fruststraightling hard to play. Mainly
because of the amount of time it takes to do anything, restocking rifle
rounds can take 5 minutes in real life to do, 3 days game time. And then
just when you think you got some controll, the game it self cheats. By not
letting you fire a gun when you should be able to. For those of you who have

Seems like you don't have the hang of the game yet. You shouldn't have to be
restocking rifle rounds. More than enough are picked up on missions.
(Besides, you only use rifles in the very beginning of the game.) As for
having the time to shoot and it won't let you, probably what is happening is
you have the time, but you are facing the wrong way. When you tell it to
shoot, man must first turn toward target and the time that takes doesn't
leave enough to shoot. THIS IS A GREAT GAME!Subj: the instruction book

If you have a PC, get that version instead. You don't need the official
strategy guide either, just download Kasey Chang's Unofficial strategy guide
for the PC version (works w/psx version too).Subj: HELP!!

I just got my @ss kicked in a desert level. Does anyone know any good
tactics for this situation. I had trouble because of the small amount of
cover, the only thing there was was cacti.(sp?) Luckily I saved just before
I went in and I would be greatfull if you gave me some tips.Subj: Re:HELP!!

Try using your tank/cannon or tank/rocket launcher for cover. Have your
troops kneel down before ending their turn.Subj: Memory?

many blocks on a memory card it takes up? I was wondering if I should buy a

It only takes up 2 blocks, but if you don't have a mem card, you better pick
one up because this is not a game you're gonna beat in a day. You can only
save one game on each memory card. Subj: Re:Memory?

2 Blocks it does not... Wait until you get deeper in the game... I have (2)
memory cards, and this game takes up 3 to 5 blocks per card... Call it over
kill, but I thought that I might need (2) cards incase... Damn Disc World
takes up 8 blocks...Subj: Get this game!

I encourage all to play X-COM: UFO Defense for Playstation! I had a hard time
liking this game the first couple of days I bought it, but now I list it
among my five favorite PSX titles. (Tekken, Twisted Metal, NHL FaceOff, and
NFL GameDay being the other four.)

No need, they are virtually the same. There is an XCOM Official players guide
that you can purchase...
The game is tough at first because you have no real stretegy. Once you get
the right weapons and armor, you will literally become braver.
email if you have any really detailed questions... I beat this game on the
beginner level, took about 2 months.

I have gotten pretty far in this game! Only problem is that I keep running
out of Ellerium and my ships cant get refueled and I need to switch back to
the old Skyranger/Interceptor rather then use the Avenger untill I find more
Ellerium! Is there any way to get more Ellerium? other then getting it on
missions? You cant make it!! Most people have problems with money on this
game, I always have $6million+, its the ellerium that kills me.
Thanks,

this game is so cool, I had it on my pc version first but now something
that is real important , to get money sell the heavy plasma but only after
your sqaud is equipped with them, plus never sell any heavy plasma clips. The
first base you should build should be in europe somewhere, because it is free
and it cost's alot to build in europe.
P.S. I hate etherials
pc games has alot of info
on this game

I love this game, but I would like to be able to construct multiple bases and
purchase large quantities of fire power. A money code would not totally ruin
this game like most cheats do. I think a money code would help liven it up a
bit. Is there one? If there is please post it.Subj: Re:Is there a money

A great way to save money is to transfer as many scientists and then as many
engineers as you can to a different base just before the end of the month
review. If you don't have enough room, build it. Its is well worth the
investment because you save the money that you would have paid them for their
monthly salaries. And that's BIG BUCKS!!Subj: x-com money code

For anyone still playing X-COM, I alluded to a Microprose link some months
ago that offered a supplement to the sparse manual. I indicated how to get
the link via a vidgames address.
Here is the Microprose address, so the site can be accessed directly:

I just got back into playing X-COM after a few month hiatus (had to play
King's Field and all), so if there's anyone still playing, learned anything
new? (grin)

I have a pretty fair idea what I'm doing too, buit no matter, the aliens
shoot from hiding, hit, kill, that's all she wrote!
Cheat codes would be nice. Or any tactics to trick the aliens so you LIVE.
Are Tanks worth it? At what point should I *gulp* invest in one, and WHICH
tank?
Ok, Email me if ya got any news on the Codes, or can help me survive the

1. Well, the best thing to do is to save enough TUs for a snapshot. Break up
your soldiers into 3 groups (2 or 3 people to each). Use cover (walls,
bushes, ect.) whenever possible.
2. The rocket launcher tank is the first thing you should have gotten. It's
durable, manuverable, and can really wreck some destruction with it's
explosive rounds.
If you need any more help regarding how to assault downed UFOs, dealing with
peticular aliens, or what is worth researching, email me.

How do I train my soldiers in psionics so that my soldiers won't get their

You have to capture any Ethreal or an Alien Leader (Gee, I can't remember the
name, but the little guys with the big eyes). When you interrogate them, you
will be able to build a Psionic training centre and from there you train your
soldiers. When recruiting soldiers, look at the bravery level. Usually a high
bravery means more resistance to mind control. You won't know a soldiers PSI
rating until they are trained however.
