Playstation: MadKatz Steering Wheel Recalibration

OK, first thing. You do this at your own risk. If you break your wheel
don't come running to me. If this even looks a BIT beyond you, don't
bother. It's only one game and it plays OK with the standard pad. I am not
responsible for any damage to anyone's Wheel OK? Or Playstation, or V-Rally
or finger or any other thing they may have. Note also that you are playing
around inside something with exposed wiring here. I don't think any wires
carry significant current, but BE CAREFUL. If you accidentally stick
yourself to the ceiling I'm not responsible for that either.

That's that out of the way, on we go..

Equipment required
One cross/phillips head screwdriver. Um, that's it.
Oh, you need a mad katz steering wheel and a playstation too. And a copy of
V-Rally. Hey, you never know..

NOTE: throughout this I'm presuming you use the right pedal (as it sits on
the floor) to accelerate with. If you use the left you will have to swap
things accordingly.

Right

SETUP
First off, plug the wheel into the PS and have V-Rally ready, preferably
already in the PS. Plug the pedals into the wheel but don't switch on yet.
It will be useful if your PS is within arm reach of you while doing all this.

STEP 1: Disassembling the pedal unit.
Turn the pedal unit over. Underneath you should see 5 screws in holes.
Unscrew them. You shoud then see the two pedal arms and two circular
'cogs' and the variable resistors that go with them. Have the unit so the
cable going out to the wheel is at the top centre.

STEP 2: Moving the acccelerator 'start point'.
The bit you want is on the left (see note above though). Grab hold of the
small plastic 'cog' and move it slowly to the left until it is no longer in
contact with the 'arm'. Don't take it off the spindle completely and try
not to turn it once it's free.

Then, rotate the cog so the 'teeth' are moving top to bottom - i.e the
tooth at the top moves towards you. Move it so that each tooth has moved
approximately one step round the cog.

STEP 3: Checking the calibration
Push the cog back into place. Then, without putting the pedal unit back
together, start your PS with V-Rally. When the language selection comes up
DO NOTHING. Right now it doesn't matter what language it's in. Eventually
it will come up to the main menu.
Press the pedal that you have been working on. You should select the arcade
menu. If not, your calibration isn't correct yet. If you do get the arcade
menu, try selecting again - I found when I got close to correct the game
would accept the first press but not later ones.

If your calibration is not yet correct , switch your PS off and repeat
steps 2 and 3 again until it is.

If your calibration appears correct (i.e. you can make selections all the
way through to race start with no problems and you might want to check the
pause menu too) then switch your PS off, reassemble the base unit and put
all the screws back in and tighten them. Your unit should now work with
V-Rally.

I have found that the best negcon settings for V-Rally are max turn 90
degrees and a dead zone of between 5 and 8.

It may also be worth checking with any other negcon games you have - there
is a possibility that you will no longer be able to get 100% throttle with
them. I tried mine with Formula 1, WipEout, WipEout 2097 and Ridge Racer
Revolution without problems. I *did* seem to hit a 'throttle barrier" with
Ridge Racer, but I am fairly certain that was due to other game settings.

Anyway, that's what I did. I hope some people will find it useful.
