Warbirds
========
Tip for new players
-------------------
When playing alone, pause the game and you can still look around with the
B' button. This may help new pilots so they can pause the action, look
around and plan their route.
To kill the Red Baron:
----------------------
First select unlimited damage, 200 rounds of ammo, no collisions, unlimited
men if you're not good at landing, and a dueling start. Once you're in the
air, fire your machine guns at the Baron. After he flies by, waste your
ammunition on purpose. Next, land. While your men are trying to fix your
plane, the Baron will crash trying to shoot you on the ground.
Single player grave sight
-------------------------
For single-player Grave Sight, as soon as you die (when the roses and skulls
border appears) quickly pause the game. 'A' button will change the viewpoint
from plane to plane (And to the point where you died). Look around with the
joypad.
Hints:
------
Regarding the head on confrontation, I don't like them. I prefer to have
an advantage in position so my philosopy is to get out fast, especially
if you are well matched. An important thing to remember here is that almost
any aircraft can pull harder inside g's than outside g's. What I like to do
is roll upside down while still at a rather large separation. This gives you
the ability to pull back on the stick and dive in an inside turn. If your
planes are equally matched, your opponent will be unable to track your turn
with his gun (since for him, he will be trying to pull an OUTSIDE looping
dive, in which he cannot pull as many g's as you). To pull this maneuver
off correctly, you have to do a couple of things. 1) get inverted
cleanly. Don't loose much altitude in the rollover; you want to meet
your opponent at equal or slightly greater altitude and at EQUAL OR
GREATER AIRSPEED. 2) Roll before your opponent can see you clearly. If
he is a human and not a computer, he won't know your inverted till he
has a good look at you. 3) Start your dive just as you come within
weapons range. You are executing a DEFENSIVE manuever. You must pull it
off cleanly and don't try to fight at the last minute because you think
you have a good shot. You have placed yourself in a weak offensive position
by inverting, so remain on the defense. 4) Determine as best you can your
opponents actions after you whiz beneath him and move to obtain an
offensive position.
About going inverted. I haven't played warbirds yet, but normally the
"snap roll" is the quickest way to invert without loosing significant
speed or altitude (you will have to see if it is possible to execute this
maneuver in the game). How to snap roll : 1) increase airspeed 2) pull up
slightly on the stick. 3) roll to either side. 4) level in an inverted position.
COMMENTS:
---------
It takes some practice to do this cleanly and finish on the same
heading you started. The momentum from the snap helps to flip the plane. I
have heard the warbirds simulates propwash (the rotational torque effects
of having a single spinning propeller and the spiraling air stream it
generates). The propwash & torque should make it easier to roll in one
direction than the other. Use the faster one. (note: I have tried to
snaproll in accurate biplane simulators before with great difficulty. If
it works, use it).
THE BIG ONE:
------------
If you remember nothing else, know these two things....
1) Altitude is Airspeed. If you have altitude, you have the advantage.
2) Speed, NOT MANUEVERABILITY, gives the combar advantage.
Don't forget rule number two! You wouldn't believe how long it took the
armed forces to realize that speed is what counts in air combat. For years
planes were designed with manueverability over speed in mind. You should
know better!
I have heard that it is possible to turn the engines on and off during
flight. This is not much of a throttle, but it is a tool in your bag of
tricks so make use of it where appropriate. The good pilot knows his plane
inside out.
LAST WORD:
----------
One of my favorite combat manuevers is the low-g-yogo. Use it when
in turning pusuit of a plane when you just can't seem to turn hard enough
to 'sight him up'. While maintaining the turn, roll down a bit and dip
towards the ground. THis will in effect give you a tighter turn. After
dipping, while still turning, pull back up on his rear and let him have
it!
Doing a vertical
----------------
Doing a vertical inside loop gives you more speed in the end than when
you started. When you start with Dueling Start, you have time to do two
of these loops before you get close enough to shoot, giving you a
tremendous speed advantage over the other plane(s). I can always kill a
single novice pilot in a very short time starting this way. I can also
kill the Red Baron pretty consistently. Going against two or more planes
is a little iffy still, the best strategy I've come up with so far is to
fly between the planes trying to get them bunched up, then getting behind
them. Not always something I can manage... But still, the speed advantage
is pretty helpful.
